Monetize Your Blog (The Marketing Way)

Thanks for returning for the second part of the “Monetize Your Blog” series. If you haven’t read my previous post “Monetize Your Blog (The Advertising Way)” then I would advise you to click the link and read it.

In this post, the topic of monetizing your blog through marketing (selling products) will be discussed.

Now I am not necessarily talking about making your own products and selling them. You can do that as well, but I am mainly talking about marketing someone else’s product on your site and collecting the commission. Now that sounds passive, doesn’t it? Well, it mainly is. The only struggles you’ll have with this method is sending enough traffic to your blog and promoting the right content to your visitors.

There are 5 main methods to monetize your blog with marketing that will be discussed in this post:

  1. Affiliate Marketing

If done right this, method is a great way to monetize your blog. Many of the previous methods can be used as affiliate marketing.

For example, if you have a gardening website you could research affiliate programs that contain products related to gardening. Perhaps someone wants people to advertise their new lawnmower product, you could write a blog entry ‘What’s the best lawnmower for my garden?’ and at the end you could promote the affiliate product.

With this form of advertising, you can get a commission with every sale that resulted from your recommendation. You refer viewers from your site via recommendations, banner ads, text link ads, etc., which takes them to the product page. If they buy, then you get a commission. This is often worked out on a percentage of the sale price, maybe 10-20%, sometimes more (I’ve seen products offer 75% commission) depending on the individual product.

Check out these great websites that have links to loads of affiliates:

  • ClickBank
  • ShareASale
  • Skimlinks
  • AffiliateWindow
  • Amazon affiliate program

  1. Product Reviews

This method is basically the same as affiliate marketing, but more obvious. You can write detailed reviews of products in your niche and publish them on your site. There is no point in doing reviews about products that has nothing to do with your niche. No one will click on a link to buy scuba gear if your blog’s main focus is on light aircrafts.

Basically, anything can be reviewed and many people take advantage of this method by creating websites that are based on the reviews of all different kind of products and services. If the product has an affiliate program, the chances of making money by reviewing it is high.

  1. Create Your Own Products And Sell Them Online

This method to monetize your blog is not for everyone, but if you have a talent in creating masterpieces or even just know how to print some art on a tee-shirt then you should probably try this out. Although the work required is a bit more than just posting the links on your website and waiting for a commission to roll in, the benefits of selling your own products are enormous. One of these benefits include keeping the entire profit of every sale and not just a percentage like when affiliate marketing.

The good thing about this is that compared to selling your product in a store that has a small customer base, you are selling it online where you have the world to sell to.

  1. Write an eBook and sell it online

If you are an aspiring writer but do not have the correct resources to be get published your worrying days are over. Writing an eBook is as easy as 1, 2, 3. The benefits to writing your own eBook and selling it online is that there are countless ways to doing it successfully. Selling your eBook on your own website will result in you keeping 100% of the sale price but your reach for new customers is very limited. Selling your eBook through a big eBook distributing company like Amazon, will only earn you a percentage of each sale, but your selling audience significantly increases.

Using both of these methods can be very lucrative way to monetize your blog when executed correctly. Selling on your blog will mean higher sales earnings, but selling through a distribution site will likely mean more sales.

  1. Write tutorials and guides

The internet is a great place to find information. What better way to use that information, than to monetize it. Everyone searches for tutorials detailing how to do certain things. You yourself are reading a guide at this moment that shows you how to monetize your blog through marketing.

I know very little about cars, so I would find tutorials and guides useful explaining technical things that I don’t know. For example, a guide listing ‘Help on buying a new car’ or ‘How to service your own car’ would be very useful.

Everybody knows something that they could teach to another, so why not write about it and publish it on your own website. If it’s a particularly popular niche that you are writing about, then you could attract a lot of traffic!

There are two ways how you can use tutorials and guides to make money on your blog. Firstly, you can use it to increase traffic to your blog then redirect customers to your selling pages, or you can incorporate advertising into your posts.

So what do you think? How many of these methods can you incorporate into your blog. If there are any other marketing methods to monetize your blog that you can think of that isn’t listed above. Please feel free to let me know in the comments below.
